In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, cybersecurity becomes increasingly critical as we rely more on digital systems for tasks such as hospital bookings and travel ticketing. With cyber threats becoming more sophisticated, there is a growing question of whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) can replace cybersecurity jobs. While AI offers powerful tools to combat cybercrime, it is far from straightforward to determine if it can fully replace human cybersecurity professionals.

AI has made significant strides in various industries, and cybersecurity is no exception. The main cybersecurity tools involve data analysis from different sources within the organization to detect any abnormalities and threats already present. We have seen this in legacy tools such as SIEM, antivirus, firewalling, and IPS/IDS, where much human interaction was involved. However, machine learning algorithms can continuously learn from new data, enhancing their ability to detect and respond to cyberattacks. This has seen a lot of changes in new SIEM, EDR, and cybersecurity tools.

Critical applications of AI in cybersecurity include:

1. Threat Detection and Prevention:

AI systems can scan network traffic in real time, flagging suspicious activities and potential threats. This allows for quicker responses and can prevent breaches before they occur. SIEM and EDR tools and technologies are used for these tasks.

2. Automated Incident Response:

When a cyberattack is detected, AI can automatically initiate predefined responses, such as isolating affected systems, blocking malicious IP addresses, or alerting security teams. SOAR technology is used for automated incident response.

3. Vulnerability Management:

AI can help identify vulnerabilities in software and systems, providing recommendations for patches and updates to mitigate risks. This technique and technology are widely used within organizations.

4. Behavioral Analysis:

AI can monitor user behaviour to detect deviations from the norm, which may indicate a compromised account or insider threat. This feature can only be analyzed using AI/ML-trained modules, which detect and predict the danger, making it very useful in cybersecurity.

The Human Factor in Cybersecurity Jobs:

Despite the capabilities of AI, the idea that it could completely replace human cybersecurity professionals is far from reality. Cybersecurity is not just about detecting and responding to threats. It involves a deep understanding of complex systems, human behaviour, and the ever-changing tactics of cybercriminals. There are several reasons why human expertise remains irreplaceable in cybersecurity:

1 Creativity and Problem-Solving:

Cybercriminals constantly develop new tactics to bypass security measures. Human experts use different tools and techniques to bring creativity and problem-solving skills. Technology undoubtedly helps secure the data and generate actionable items. However, human intervention is 100% required to validate the results and take necessary action.

2. Contextual Understanding:

AI analyses data and recognizes patterns. However, it often doesn’t understand the full context needed to interpret the details of a cyber threat. Human analysts can look at the bigger picture of a situation and consider factors that AI might miss.

3. Ethical Judgment:

Cybersecurity choices often involve ethics, like balancing privacy with security or deciding how to respond to a threat to minimize harm. Humans have to make these choices because they can’t be completely automated.

4. Adaptability:

AI systems can learn and adapt but are still limited by the data and algorithms they are trained on. Humans can quickly adjust to new and unexpected threats because they have a wide range of experiences and insights from which to draw.

AI/ML Systems need cybersecurity Jobs:

AI/ML modules need strong cybersecurity. Trained AI/ML modules, which have taken a lot of effort and energy to develop, can be erased by just a few commands, which is a more significant threat than other cyber attacks.

Remember this:

Using AI in cybersecurity doesn’t mean replacing human jobs. It means making cybersecurity experts’ work more accessible and more effective. AI can do repetitive tasks, process large amounts of data, and find insights faster. This lets human experts focus on important cybersecurity work like finding threats, making policies, and responding to incidents.

The future of cybersecurity is about combining AI and human expertise. AI can quickly and efficiently handle increasing cyber threats, while human experts bring critical thinking, creativity, and ethical judgment.

AI is changing cybersecurity by offering powerful tools to find and stop threats. However, thinking that AI can do cybersecurity jobs independently is wrong. Human expertise is essential, especially in creative, context-driven, and ethical areas. The future of cybersecurity will probably involve AI and humans working together to protect our digital world.
